Sam Blackmore: An alternative monetary system!
It’s all about the Bitcoin baby!
Well, now I’m reminded of what Warren Buffett said on investing: It’s wise to be “Fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful.”
I doubt the guy who’s arguably the richest in the world would say this about Bitcoin though- but I do wonder if perhaps his wisdom transcends his knowledge. In the current, non-hyped up environment where Bitcoin has now been stable (relatively) for 6-9 months, could purchasing Bitcoin and holding now, be a wise move?
Bitcoin is a divisive topic though – Perhaps Warren Buffet, just like many of us, are really only comfortable with a certain reality that already agrees with our current opinions. It’s far easier to move with the crowd and right now the crowd has all but dismissed Bitcoin as a fad.
Two responses people I commonly hear about Bitcoin is this: ‘It’s a bubble, I don’t like it, keep it away from me’ (that was me up until recently I must confess!). Secondly, ‘It’s the way of the future. The entire monetary system as we know it will soon collapse, and if you don’t believe that too, you’re an egg’. (that’s not me I promise!). No other area of investment seems to attract such dogmatic, fundamentalist, techno-crypto fanaticism than Bitcoin.
So what’s the deal with Bitcoin – would you be a schmuck for getting into it now? Would you be a schmuck if you didn’t I wonder?
Certainly, as Venezuala, South Africa and Turkey can all testify, relying on a government to underwrite the currency in today’s ‘hopped up’, quantitative-easing world, maybe folly indeed. I wonder if trusting in mathematics is better than trusting in a monetary system that’s been so interfered with for the last 50 years it’s getting to be a joke.

Sam Blackmore, CEO and co-founder of MyCryptoSaver gives a unique insight into a technology that will change the world!
Sam’s not a nut-job – but he’s an advocate for a technology that has the power to change the world – Blockchain.
Blockchain had a baby called Bitcoin, right after the Global Financial Crisis in 2007 – it mysteriously came on the scene from a person calling himself ‘Satoshi Nakamoto’. Bitcoin is likely the most famous of a group of crypto-currencies that have been birthed amid growing dis-trust in the current global financial system. Many believe that crypto-currency can change the world by enabling people to freely move value directly between each other without having a third party (including a government). Can it really change the world though?
You could focus on the hype, and the fact that if you purchased a bitcoin ages ago you’d be driving a Lambo today, but Sam prefers to focus on the tech. Being a software engineer by trade he first became involved with Bitcoin in 2012 and is also an avid Linux user and Open Source Software advocate. He founded MyCryptoSaver (then called MyBitcoinSaver) in 2014. He previously co-founded a successful web development company with over 10 staff and before that he built a weather forecasting startup that he sold.
Darcy Ungaro interviewed Sam Blackmore on Bitcoin specifically – this recording was done about 4 months ago and interestingly, the value of Bitcoin has not changed significantly from this time.
Whilst we would strongly suggest caution with speculating in anything that is unknown to you, if you feel like you’re ready to get involved with Bitcoin, please check out MyCryptoSaver.com today – by signing up you will also be financially supporting the podcast, NZ Everyday Investor in a small way.

Paul Manning: The Potconomic Revolution Part Two
Paul Manning joins host Darcy Ungaro and Tanya aka ‘pumpkin’ to discuss how a business getting started in the shadows, is gearing up to shine…big time!
The emerging Potconomy is going to be huge! From an investment opportunity, there’s an increasing trend to invest in a way that’s in alignment with values and subject to your views on this product, investing in medical cannabis could soon be be factored into your portfolio. If you’re investing in a way aligned with a social good, and this could be one, you may soon find yourself in the company of a large crowd. When funding flows into an emerging market like this, especially one which is then watch out, the potconomy is about to explode!
Helius therapeutics is a NZ company currently waiting for a licence to be approved to cultivate cannabis for research purposes. This $15m vertically integrated business is poised for great success, assuming the law changes of course! Paul Manning, one of the directors and co-founders of Helius Therapeutics, joined Darcy Ungaro on the ‘NZ Everyday Investor’ podcast recently to discuss how his business, and NZ could benefit tremendously, as this market matures.
The best advice Paul gave on the show to investors was to ‘look for sunrise industries, not sunset ones’.
Investing in tobacco, alcohol, oil, and weapons manufacturing could be considered sunset sectors. Cannabis will disrupt big pharma, potentially the same way that the electric vehicle movement is currently disrupting big oil. There are tremendous opportunities for Kiwi’s to enter this market – not just directly, but on the periphery too. Think of all the greenhouses, farms, and vineyards that now have another crop to diversify into.
The global legal cannabis industry could be worth conservatively $63.5b globally by 2024 in USD. NZ is a little bit behind if I’m honest, but I think we’re catching up!
Paul Manning is a New Zealand Young Entrepreneur of the Year and one of the country’s foremost leaders in the advertising and marketing sector.
Starting out as an entrepreneur at 22, Paul went on to build New Zealand’s largest independent communications agency. He later sold the company to global giant, Ogilvy & Mather. He has spent 15 years consulting to local and central government and advising major brands across every sector, including healthcare, pharmacy and agriculture.
Paul recently left his career running major communications agency, 99, to co-found the New Zealand-based bitotech startup, Helius Therapeutics – a company focused on the cultivation, research and manufacturing of medicinal cannabis products. Paul and the team have just raised $15m in series A capital, and are now leading this nascent industry in New Zealand.

Paul Manning: The Potconomic Revolution Part One
Paul Manning: The Potconomic Revolution
Paul Manning, one of the co-founders of Helius Therapeutics joins host Darcy Ungaro and the mysterious ‘Pumpkin’ to explore something that we normally don’t speak much on: Cannabis.
A thick cloud’s slowly dissipating on a social and economic opportunity for NZ. As little as 3 years ago, it would have been ridiculous to suggest that the consumption of cannabis would soon be socially acceptable. Wow – look where we are now! 89% of Kiwi’s are now in support of cannabis reform.
This is as much about social reform as it is about translating a $1.3 billion black market industry into legitimate taxable activity. From potheads to solicitors, we’re all starting to finally realise that perhaps the harm of this drug is nothing compared to the harm of opioids and alcohol. Recreational use aside, medical use of cannabis could, and perhaps should, displace at least some of the more harmful treatments for pain, and other ailments, currently available in New Zealand.
