If you’re like me, and you have that one friend who just doesn’t stop reminding you to buy an NFT, well this show is for you, because you can follow along if you like. I’m buying an NFT today on the Solana network – it’s fast, and it’s cheap – and it’s the cheap bit that’s hopefully saved me from the wrath of my better half but hey – I own a digital tree!

Bees to Bioplastic – Veronica Harwood Stevenson, Humble Bee Bio

Bees to Bioplastic – Veronica Harwood Stevenson, Humble Bee Bio

There’s a thing called the SIN List. Standing for Substitute It Now, the list identifies the chemicals in our textiles, furniture, food, and daily life that are slowly poisoning us, killing our bodies and environment. Replacing that list with nature-based alternatives is the mission of Humble Bee Bio, the ambitious biotech start-up of Veronica Harwood Stevenson. You may have heard of Humblebee, sometimes described as one of NZ’s hottest biotech start-ups. Now fives years into the journey the Wellington company is trying to replicate a cellophane-like substance found in bees’ nests to create a harmless bioplastic. Humble Bee has scored some wins. It’s sequenced the protein in question, poised to manufacture its synthetic alternative, and in the throes of a $13m capital raise. Vincent caught up with Veronica to discuss biology, bees bums, and babies.

Simultaneous or Sequential Investing

Of course this isn’t an ‘either or’ thing here just like so many areas of investing, but I’ve yet to see any finance commentators touch on this topic, Here goes!

Simultaneous investing is most likely the smartest thing for many of us to do – no matter if it’s a lump sum to invest, or you have a regular amount to invest which is the same each time, investing in a bunch of stuff all at once could be the way to go. You’ve decided perhaps on the ideal portfolio, so why not contribute to everything all at the same time? This makes sense especially, if you’re a fan of diversification and not timing the market.

Sequential investing on the other hand, is about focusing on building up key elements of your portfolio one after another, ideally starting with the higher risk components first. Given this is a more concentrated strategy which offers little diversification through time (as you’re focusing all your investing power in just one area before moving on), it lends itself to smaller, satellite components of your portfolio.

2021 showed us the extent that government and central banks around the globe are willing to go to, to maintain the integrity of the status quo – 2022 will bring more consequences of this approach I think. In 2021, we saw how the beneficiaries of loose monetary policy – property owners specifically, were turned against, as if they themselves were responsible for the cheap and abundant credit and rising inequality the reserve bank and government created. In 2022, you’ll see the new enemy is now medium sized business owners – who, in the midst of inflation we haven’t seen in decades, rush to increase prices yet resist requested pay increases from employees. Let’s be clear though – when you hear about this – it’s just inflation – and it comes about when there’s too much money chasing too few goods and services – it’s not caused by greedy business owners. Economics will yield to politics for only so long but For the benefit of all NZ we need to defend the pillars of the economy because in 2022, they’ll come under attack again, and sadly the attack will come from those with no skin in the game, and zero accountability.

The good news though, – the scarier things get out there, the better it is for those who run against the tide – those who bet against the herd. When there’s greed, be fearful, when there’s fear, be bold – there may be further subtle shades of this phrase revealed in 2022 – But There’s a strategy here for the everyday investor like you and me.

Everyday investors may have more choice and lower barriers to entry when investing in shares, but investing in debt-markets is neither exciting, nor that accessible.

All of this could change fast from here.

Will Remor is well known in the blockchain community here in NZ, and is actively involved with projects like Maker DAO.

Today is the first part in a two part series. Overall, here’s what we’re aiming to cover:

1. balance sheet basics

2. balance sheet for financial services

3. 101 on lending – how does it work from a banks perspective

4. how financial services uses this thing securitisation to help fund lending activities

5. how to bring that securitisation on-chain via nfts

6. how Defi creates additional sources of liquidity which diversifies the funding base and reducing systemic liquidity risk (e.g. covid, GFC…)

The Core/Satellite framework, what can be an everyday investors best friend.

What a ‘core’ though?

It’s when about 50%+ of all your investments meet the following criteria (and no, this doesn’t have to be a strict rule!)

Diversified (Different styles, sectors, companies, perhaps even timeframes)

Low cost (again, not a hard and fast rule, but the core should largely be ‘set and forget’)

Acceptable volatility (all investments go up and down in value but due to diversification, if done well, this should be reduced)

The core component ‘gives you the market’ and your reward is compounding returns over time.

What’s a ‘satellite’?

It’s concentrated (more eggs in one, hopefully successful basket, gives you the opportunity for out-performance)

It’s higher cost (not always, but often the fees or transaction costs could be higher)

It’s more actively managed (either by you, or an active manager that you appoint)

Your satellite gives you a fighting change of getting a better return than what the average market return could be over time. It limits your downside at the same time.

Today, what about property? Many Kiwi’s likely view this as their core component, but considering the above, does it hit all the criteria?

This was the last News of the Money-World for 2021 – hope you enjoyed it – see you all in 2022
