Wealth – is it finite, or infinite?

We need to stop pulling down those who’ve built up wealth in this country and we need to ignore the ignorance of those who genuinely think they can make communism great again – it’s anti-wealth, anti-choice, and anti-freedom.

Often some who’ve been exposed to Marxist ideology (most likely at university), when they try to build wealth in their own worlds, there’s a wall of resistance – they may not have a name for it or even be aware of it, but they feel that there’s something wrong about creating financial security in their lives – why is this?

Tackling Building Waste – Dr Teri-Ann Berry

Tackling Building Waste – Dr Teri-Ann Berry

Each year, the construction and demolition industry creates 1.7 million tonnes of waste – making up 60% of total landfills. So much of that waste is recoverable, recyclable, and unnecessary. No one cares more about solving that problem than Dr. Terri-Ann Berry, Associate Professor at Auckland’s Unitec and the co-founder of the Environmental Solutions Research Centre and the aptly named Sustainable Construction Avengers. The centre works with students, industry, and scientists to tackle waste at its source and solve intractable problems such as the mounting pile of plastic that comes from construction sites.

Read about the future of financial advice here

1971 was an interesting year in music and in the world of finance. Nestled among The top 10 rock songs of 1971 you’ll find gems like American Pie by Don McLean, Won’t get fooled again by the Who, Riders on the storm by the Doors and Oye Como Va by Santana.

The Bretton Woods agreement became fully operational in 1958, where international currencies could be traded for USD, and these USD could be converted to Gold – Now guess when this all changed 1971, when US President Richard Nixon took the US dollar off the gold standard.

Socially, maybe it was 1971 when the pendulum the baby boomers set in motion began. Perhaps enough of them doing all the same thing and thinking the same thoughts at the same time perhaps created this present age more than we appreciate – they all left home, got married, popped out a few kids and bought property pretty much all at the same time– they had enough war talk from their parents, let’s live they thought – and they did.

So 50 years later, here we are in 2021… Is the music as good as it was in 1971 – eh meh, perhaps its only in the money-space where we’ll see some patterns persist.

IPCC Report part 3 – The insider’s guide, with Professor Dave Frame

This week Vincent is joined by Professor Dave Frame, Director of the New Zealand Climate Change Research Institute (CCRI) at Victoria University and a lead author on the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. This is the third part of our series on IPCC report, so Vincent asked if Dave could give us an insider’s view of how the IPCC works, on the science of warming and the role of methane in global heating a topic of huge importance to NZ.

We’d be hard-pressed to find someone more qualified. Dave has a background in physics, philosophy, and policy. Previous posts have included research positions at the University of Oxford’s Departments of Physics and Geography, and as Deputy Director of the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment. He has also worked at the New Zealand Treasury and served on secondment at the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change.

In more than 150 cities around the world, Covid 19 has been what you might call a shot in the arm for walking and cycling. To encourage social distancing, they added cycleways, extended footpaths, and replaced parking spots with outdoor seating. What did New Zealand do? For the answer, we spoke to researcher Dr Kirsty Wild, co-author of a Waka Kotahi report into streetscape reallocation in this country as a response to the pandemic.
