Is civil disobedience effective? David Williams, Newsroom

Is civil disobedience effective? David Williams, Newsroom

David Williams is a journalist with Newsroom. He recently interviewed Extinction Rebellion protesters, Nick Hanafin and Siana Fitzjohn who climbed aboard the oil rig COSL Prospector in the Cook Strait in 2020 and were subsequently prosecuted. The interview piqued my interest, as it got into the minds and hearts of two incredibly brave and yet, surprisingly ordinary people who were prepared to push the law and their own safety to the limit.

Now, as our government throws down the welcome mat to the oil and gas industry and walks back on climate change commitments, I want to know will we see more protests and indeed is civil disobedience an effective tool in the fight against the fossil fuel industry.

Read David’s excellent story here https://newsroom.co.nz/2024/04/04/inside-the-minds-of-the-oil-rig-climbing-activists/

Financial Plumbing: What Lies Beneath, Ep 417 David Callanan

Today it’s about the pipes of the current financial system. In the future, various forms of value will stream at the speed of light. Today though, our investments move more like fluids, through valves and holding tanks – checks and balances and policies and procedures keep us safe, with the help of supervisors, regulators, custodians and trustees.

Can you trust the system not to lose your money when you invest?  Can the government or a dodgy KiwiSaver provider steel your money? Read more

David Callanan is my guest today and he’s the General Manager of Corporate Trustee Services at Public Trust.

Investing in New Rails / Ryan Johnson-Hunt Ep 416

A mere half-century ago, a commute that now takes minutes could consume an entire day. Just as rails would have accelerated our pace of life relative to the horse-and-buggy, emerging digital infrastructure promises to get more of our dollars, working at a faster speed. You’ve heard this in relation to fees, but I feel the conversation needs to go deeper, and consider the legacy institutions that can now be made redundant. Read more.
